MTN Celebrates 30 Years of Driving Change in South Africa and Looks Forward to a Brighter Future

MTN is celebrating its 30th birthday this year, reflecting on three decades of collaboration with communities and both private and public sector organizations to foster growth in South Africa. The telecommunications giant is proud of its contributions and achievements, particularly its sustained Level 1 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) contributor status, which it has retained for five consecutive years.

“We recognize that our success is intertwined with the success of local businesses and people in the markets in which we operate,” said MTN Business. This sentiment underscores MTN’s commitment to South Africa and its ongoing efforts to support local communities.

Significant Achievements

One of MTN’s most notable achievements is its RT-15 agreement with the South African government, secured in 2021. This agreement allows MTN to collaborate with provincial and national state departments to support crucial sectors and the communities they serve. A key component of this partnership is MTN’s world-class network, which provides exceptional data, voice, and SMS packages to keep government employees connected.

Enhancing Government Services

Empowering Communities and Youth

MTN has also launched several initiatives aimed at empowering South African communities directly. Key among these are its skills development programs: the MTN Online School and the MTN Skills Academy.

The MTN Online School provides educational content from grades R to 12, while the Skills Academy offers post-matric courses, including digital marketing and data science-related short courses. Together, these programs equip young South Africans with the skills needed to grow the local economy and their communities. Over 700,000 learners have accessed the Online School’s digital curriculum, and more than 900 unemployed youths have received training through the MTN Skills Academy.

Supporting Local Businesses

MTN’s commitment to local businesses extends to its own supply chain through initiatives like the Xlerator enterprise and supplier development program. This program offers financial, developmental, and training support to black-owned suppliers, helping entrepreneurs build their businesses and create employment opportunities within their communities.

Looking Ahead

As MTN celebrates its 30th anniversary, it looks forward to continuing its work in driving positive change and supporting the growth of South Africa. The company remains dedicated to enhancing connectivity, education, and business opportunities, ensuring a brighter future for all.
