Mbabane, Eswatini – The Ministry of Health has bolstered its emergency response capabilities with the delivery of eight new ambulances, which were handed over to regional health facilities today. The handover ceremony, held under the leadership of Health Minister Hon. Mduduzi Matsebula and Principal Secretary Khanyakwezwe Mabuza, was attended by members of parliament and health administrators from across the country.

The fleet, procured through a grant from the World Bank at a cost of E13 million, will serve key health facilities, including Matsanjeni Health Centre, Nhlangano Health Centre, Sithobela Health Centre, Emkhuzweni Health Centre, Dvokolwako Health Centre, Hlathikhulu Government Hospital, Mankayane Government Hospital, and Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital.

In addition to the ambulances, the Ministry also received a stockpile of medical equipment and supplies valued at E8 million, also funded by the World Bank. This stockpile includes essential items for health emergencies such as patient monitors, ventilators, emergency shelter boxes, fire extinguishers, and more. These supplies will be critical in addressing future emergencies and enhancing the country’s preparedness.

During the ceremony, Minister Matsebula expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the World Bank: “The ministry appreciates the US$3 million support received through a grant from the World Bank. This initiative is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Ministry in preparedness for health emergencies. The transformation of Eswatini’s emergency preparedness landscape has included mapping potential hazards and ensuring adequate supplies for future crises.”

The eight ambulances and the stockpile of emergency supplies will play a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare services and ensuring the country is well-equipped to manage health emergencies.
