Mbabane, Eswatini – The U20 Men’s National Team is making final preparations for the highly anticipated TotalEnergies U20 AFCON | COSAFA Qualifier 2024, which will take place in Maputo, Mozambique, from September 26 to October 5, 2024. Eswatini is set to compete in Group A alongside host nation Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.

The team, currently in full-time camp at the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Technical Centre, is optimistic about its chances despite being drawn in a challenging group. Head coach Mduduzi Nxumalo shared his confidence in the squad during an open media session, stating, “The preparations are going very well. As a team, we want to play very well regardless that we are in a tough group.”

Coach Nxumalo noted that the team comprises a mix of experienced players who have graduated from the U17 National Team and new talents identified during the national team’s regional visits earlier this year. The recently concluded Tinkhundla U20 Tournament also played a pivotal role in the talent identification process. “The visits to various regions and the Tinkhundla Tournament helped us in identifying the right talent for the national team,” Nxumalo explained.

National team captain Luyanda Nhlengetfwa, who advanced from the U17 squad, echoed his coach’s sentiments, expressing confidence in the team’s preparation. “The preparations are going very well. Having some players who played together in the U17 national team and the international friendly matches we played have enhanced our readiness for this tournament,” said the skipper.

South African-based striker Phiwayinkhosi Dube, who plays for TUT U19, is excited to make his debut with the national team. “I am excited about the challenge and getting the call-up. Getting national team caps will enhance my football career. We are a strong group of players, and we can do well in the tournament,” Dube shared.

As the tournament approaches, the team is determined to make their mark and bring pride to Eswatini on the international stage.
