Lubombo, Eswatini – The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to community development by donating E370,000 towards the enhancement of the Jilobi Campsite, an eco-tourism project located on the scenic Lubombo Plateau. This contribution, made through EEC’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) program, will play a pivotal role in the completion of the campsite’s reception block and the connection of electricity to the area.

The Jilobi Campsite forms a key part of the Jilobi Community Trust, a conservation initiative that unites the communities of Maphungwane, Tikhuba, and Lukhetseni. The Trust aims to manage and conserve the Jilobi Forest, an ecologically and culturally significant area known for its endangered plant species, as well as its role in providing water, medicinal plants, and timber to surrounding villages.

EEC’s donation will not only contribute to the infrastructure development but also support sustainable tourism efforts in the region. By facilitating eco-tourism through projects like the Jilobi Campsite, local communities can benefit from new economic opportunities while ensuring the sustainable management of their natural resources.

Speaking on behalf of EEC, Mr. Mkhonta highlighted the company’s dedication to balancing its core business with social responsibility: “While the core business of the company is to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity in the country, we are also a part of the community. This means that, like every member of the community, we have a duty to take care of our neighbours and fellow citizens.”

The campsite will also serve as the base for the annual Jilobi Challenge Walk, a popular eco-tourism event that draws visitors to explore the scenic hiking trails in the Jilobi Forest, further boosting the local economy.
