Botswana Football Association Addresses Turmoil in the Botswana Football League

In response to the recent upheaval within the Botswana Football League (BFL), the Botswana Football Association (BFA) issued a comprehensive statement outlining their stance on the unfolding situation.

On 21 December, Messrs N.I. Zakhem and J.N. Shah lodged an urgent application against the BFL and Messrs T.G. Ratlhaga and T. Toteng, seeking to halt their removal from office until a review is conducted. The BFA, being the governing body of football in Botswana, has taken a decisive approach to address the matter.

The BFA is unwavering in its commitment to upholding the principles delineated in the FIFA Statutes, notably Article 11.1, which mandates the BFA to govern and supervise football in the country. Additionally, as the supreme governing authority for football in Botswana per Article 4.1 of the BFA Constitution, the association aims to maintain the integrity and stability of football in the nation.

In light of the dispute affecting the BFL, the BFA Emergency Committee convened on 30 December 2023 to deliberate on the pressing issues at hand. The following resolutions were reached:

  1. Withdrawal of Legal Case: Messrs N.I. Zakhem and J.N. Shah are instructed to withdraw their case from the high court and adhere to established mechanisms and procedures outlined in football prescripts. Any grievances they may have should be directed to the relevant Botswana Football Association Judicial Body.
  2. Invalidity of Palapye Meeting: The shareholders’ meeting held at Palapye on 16 December was deemed in contravention of the BFA and BFL constitution, particularly violating the Memorandum of Agreement signed on 04 May 2023. This agreement granted the BFL the authority to run the league on behalf of the BFA. Consequently, the BFA will not recognize the decisions made at the Palapye meeting, invoking clause 16.4 of the BFA constitution.
  3. Directives to Shareholders: Shareholders are directed to promptly withdraw the resolutions made at the Palapye meeting and lodge any grievances or disputes affecting the league with the BFA NEC. This approach aligns with the agreement between the BFL and the BFA.

The BFA assures stakeholders that subsequent updates will be provided as the matter unfolds.
